Getting books to kids is what we do

Building a Bookshelf improves literacy in children by providing books to programs, partners and families that serve children in need.

On Site Book Distributions

Building a Bookshelf works with local agencies that support children of low income or at risk families. We attend events held by the agencies for the families they serve and set up a table full of books that the children can 'shop' from. Allowing the children to pick out their own book gives them a sense pride of ownership. And, it's just plain fun!
Here are just a few of the places and great organizations with whom we work, or have worked, with:
  • Johnson County WIC
  • Olathe Head Start
  • Mother's Hands
  • Kansas City Indian Center
  • Communities in Schools
If your organization would like to have Building a Bookshelf distribute books at your event, please contact us.

On Site Bookshelves

Some organizations that support children of low income or at risk families do not host events, but still have the opportunity to distribute books to the children they serve. In these organizations, we stock bookshelves with books so that the agency can encourage the children to select one and take it home with them.  This allows the agency to extend the services they offer without adding cost to their programs.

We've placed bookshelves across the city:
  • Johnson County WIC (Women, Infants, and Children nutritional assistance)
  • Cross-Lines - we've provided two bookshelves to Cross-Lines; one in the administrative office where children wait for their parents to complete paperwork, and the other in the dining hall where free community lunches are provided.
  • Ozanam - helping kids ages 12-18 get their lives back on track, we've provided bookshelves that allow the children constant access to books.
  • Ivanhoe Community Center - Ivanhoe, a community in the heart of Kansas City is working to make the neighborhood safe, clean, and beautiful for it's children.  We've provided a bookshelf for their community center since the neighborhood currently does not have a library.
  • Children's Mercy Hospital - we've provided CMH over 4,000 books for distribution through the ER waiting room.

If your organization would like to have Building a Bookshelf install a bookshelf at your event, let us know.

Classroom Distributions

Building a Bookshelf supports teachers and schools by providing books to be used or distributed through the classroom or library of Title 1 schools. If you are a teacher, librarian, PTA/PTO member, or school administrator who would like to secure books for your school, click here.

Other Book Distributions

If you need books for your organization, but none of the distribution methods above seem to fit, that's OK.  Drop us a note and let us know what you need and we'll see what we can do.
